FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What should I bring to my first class?

On Mon/Wed/Fri, we train in a uniform called a “gi” consisting of long pants, a jacket, and a belt. We have plenty on hand for you to borrow. If you have your own, that’s great. We allow any color, brand, or affiliation patches. Your gi should be clean, well-fitting, and free of holes or tears. On Tues/Thurs, we train “no-gi.” Shorts without pockets and a compression shirt (rash guard) are preferred. A water container and flip-flops are a good call as well.

Can i try it out before joining?

Yep! Just see one of our instructors or members to fill out a contact form/ waiver and you’re good to go for a free week of training.

Can I train here if I go to another academy?

Yep! We don’t go in for gym drama. We just want to train. Come visit class, come to Open Mat. We are Switzerland… neutral.

Do I need to be in shape?

In short…  no. For most people, Jiu-Jitsu is completely different from any activity, sport, or exercise they’ve ever done. Whether you are straight off the couch or right out of the CrossFit gym, Jiu-Jitsu is a cardio, strength, and mental workout that you simply can’t prepare for. The only way to get in shape for Jiu-Jitsu is to do Jiu-Jitsu.

Etiquette?

We’re not concerned with bowing or anything like that, and you don’t need to ask permission to come on to the mats. We appreciate respectful gestures like these but we are much more concerned with folks respecting the space and their training partners. So just a few things to keep in mind:

  • Don’t be stinky. Wash your equipment between each training session. This means Gi, shorts, rash guard, AND BELT!

  • Trim your finger and toe nails, wash your hair, brush your teeth, and call your mother once in a while.

  • Shoes are not allowed on the mat. No bare feet in the bathroom (HINT: wear flip flops to the gym).

  • Respect your training partners and coaches. This is a contact sport but if tempers flare, both athletes will be asked to leave the mats.

  • Don’t give any more than you want to get. Remember, you are coming into a room full of people who are there to learn and have fun. Many will know more than you do so don’t expect to “win” right out of the gate.

  • No slamming, gouging, pinching, slapping, punching, or kicking.
