How We Train

Learn the position. Understand the possibilities.

Our approach starts with movement, leverage, and control. Instruction and partner drills give you time to work through the details; positional sparring and live rounds help you develop timing and make decisions against resistance. You can start with no experience and build a game you understand through regular practice.

In Gi classes, you train in a jacket, pants, and belt and learn to use clothing grips. No-Gi classes use a rash guard or fitted athletic shirt and shorts, with grips on the body instead. Both develop your ability to move, escape, and control positions. Train with care, ask questions, and help your partners learn.

Adult Jiu-Jitsu

Jiu-jitsu is a skill you build one class and one round at a time. At CJJA, adults train in the Gi and No-Gi, working on the positions, escapes, and submissions that make up a complete ground game. Technique instruction, partner drilling, positional sparring, and live rounds help you understand both how a movement works and when to use it.

Our academy is led by Brian Solly, a black belt under John Piper and the 2020 IBJJF Pan American Champion. The coaching team also includes Dr. Jen Case, a third-degree black belt and 15-time IBJJF Masters World Champion. Their teaching and competition experience support students learning the basics, refining their game, or preparing to compete.

You do not need experience or a particular fitness level to begin. Come ready to learn, ask questions, and be a good training partner. Judo and competition drilling offer more ways to develop your skills. Loaner gis are available for your first week.

Kids Jiu-Jitsu

Our kids program gives children ages 5–12 a place to learn jiu-jitsu, make friends, and work through challenges with their teammates. Classes combine movement games, technique, and partner drills to develop balance, coordination, and an understanding of how to control positions on the ground.

Brian Solly brings a background in education and experience as a middle-school teacher to the academy. Our coaches use clear instruction and patient guidance to help kids learn to listen, follow directions, and practice with care. Progress comes through repetition, effort, and learning how to be a good partner.

Self-defense skills go hand in hand with responsibility and respect. We want kids to become more confident in what they can do and thoughtful about how they use it. A free week gives your child time to meet the coaches, join the team on the mats, and get a feel for training at CJJA.

For a student age 13–17, contact us before booking so we can help you choose an appropriate class.

Cornelius Judo — throwing partners surrounded by waves

Standing Grappling · Gi Training

Judo

Develop the standing side of your grappling. Judo centers on balance, grips, movement, and throws: learning how to create an opening and bring a partner to the mat with control. These skills complement the ground positions you practice in jiu-jitsu.

Our Judo coaching team includes Josh Roach, Brian Mynatt, and Soufiane Gdahfa. Check the live calendar for current sessions. If you are new to Judo or arranging a class for a child, contact us and we will help you get started.

Open Mat

Open Mat is part of how we bring the Lake Norman jiu-jitsu community together. CJJA is an independent academy, and our mats are open to students from every school and affiliation. Come for extra rounds, spend time drilling with a partner, or revisit a position that gave you trouble in class.

This is time to direct your own training and learn from the people around you. Communicate with your partners, agree on the pace, and train with control. Whether you are a regular at CJJA or visiting for the first time, you are welcome to share the mats. Open Mat is always free.

Always free · No membership or drop-in pass required

Private Coaching

Private coaching gives you time to work on the details of your own jiu-jitsu with a CJJA coach. That might mean building confidence in fundamental positions, finding an answer to a recurring problem in your rounds, or sharpening a part of your game for competition.

Bring your questions and goals. Your coach can watch how you move, break down the position, and guide you through adjustments you can take back into group training. Book a one-on-one session or add a partner to work through the material together.

Contact us with your experience, availability, and what you want to work on so we can arrange a session. Private lessons are booked separately from group memberships and the free trial week.

1 hour: $75 · 3 sessions: $180 · Add a partner: $20 per session. Base lesson rates; confirm any payment fees with your coach.

Visiting Cornelius or the Lake Norman area? Bring your gear and join us for class. We welcome visiting grapplers from every academy and affiliation. Each drop-in pass covers one adult or kids jiu-jitsu class. Check the calendar for a suitable session before buying your pass.

Choose an adult or kids pass below and arrive a few minutes early to meet the coach and complete a waiver. Any clean gi is welcome, regardless of brand, color, or academy patch. For No-Gi, bring a rash guard or fitted athletic shirt and shorts without pockets. Pack water and sandals for off the mats; loaner gis are available if you need one.

Adult drop-in passes must be used within 30 days of purchase. Unused adult passes expire and are non-refundable.

If you are coming for Open Mat only, there is no charge and no drop-in pass required. We look forward to sharing some rounds.
